Derek raising money for burgled OAP

derek-cotty-26.jpgChertsey councillor Derek Cotty is hoping to raise £1,000 to save a elderly woman's Christmas after she was burgled for the fourth time in five years.

He is recruiting members of a charity he is involved in to help with fundraising, but says the charity prefers to remain nameless!

It comes after Winifred Remnant, 86, of Cowley Avenue, Chertsey, had more than £1,000 in cash stolen after answering the door to two men dressed in boiler suits on the evening of Wednesday Novemeber 12.

They told her they were from a water company and that they had come to fix a leak in her house, so she checked their identification and let them in.

Ms Remnant said: "This is the fourth time it's happened to me, and I'm not sure what I've done to deserve it. I've had a miserable time over the last few years.

"I hope they catch the men that did it. I'm completely shocked that I've been picked out again, especially as they went through my bedroom and stole my pension."

The men followed Mrs Remnant into her kitchen, where she did have a water leak, and while one was talking to her about the water, the other went into the bedroom and took the money, which was rolled up inside a pencil case.

She said: "It's so upsetting that I did my best and checked identification but they were still dodgy. What more can you do?

"I'm a lot more suspicious now of everyone who comes to my door."

Ms Remnant is so suspicious of visitors that when the police called, she would not let them in even though they had shown identification.

She phoned Addlestone police station to confirm who they were before inviting them inside.

But there may be a happy ending for Winifred as Chertsey councillor Derek Cotty is gathering funds through one of the charities he is involved in.

He said: "It's desperately sad that someone should be targeted so many times, but we'll do our best to make sure she has a happy Christmas."

Both suspects were white, aged between 45 and 50, 5ft 9ins, and of medium build and both wore blue boiler suits and black baseball caps.
