THE Independent Police Complaints Commission has said it does not need to investigate an incident in which a BMW driver crashed and died on the M25 shortly after police had tried to stop him.

The victim's car collided with the back of an articulated lorry on the clockwise carriageway near Chertsey.

The motorway was closed for several hours between junctions 10 and 11 following the crash at around 11.55pm on Monday (December 19).

A police spokesman said that officers had earlier attempted to stop the silver BMW.

The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene but has not yet been formally identified.

Surrey Police referred the incident to the IPCC, which has now found there is no reason for it to investigate.

A statement said: "As a result, the IPCC is content for Surrey Police to complete the investigation into this incident."

The IPCC said an investigator was sent to the scene following the fatality, and that a "thorough and independent assessment of all the available information" had been carried out, including viewing CCTV footage.

It added: "On the basis of the information we have seen, the IPCC is confident officers involved observed all necessary policies and procedures.".
