Speed imit at Chertsey accident blackspot to be reduced
THE speed limit around a notorious Chertsey accident blackspot is to be reduced from 70mph to 50mph.
The A320 Staines Road, which runs from Chertsey and past Thorpe Park, will be given its new limit next year after the move was approved by Surrey County Council's local committee for Runnymede on Monday.
The road has been the scene of a number of crashes over the years, particularly at its junction with St Ann's Road. Earlier this year a car collided with the wall of a bungalow.
Councillor Chris Norman said he welcomed the move and thought Surrey Police had been right to push for the limit to be lowered.
He said: "There has been a number of accidents, some very serious, on that stretch over the years and some steps had already been taken to improve safety.
"Signs were moved to improve visibility and the junction with St Ann's Road was changed to make it safer but I think the speed limit change will improve it even further.
"Everyone on the committee was in complete agreement and it should be in force early next year."
The committee voted unanimously to approve the lower speed limit.

Seems to me what's needed is the junction being re-engineered. Roundabout is obvious. The last round of engineering seemed to be focused on failure of inattentive drivers. Speed cameras won't help. Oh, sorry, jumping ahead from 'reduced speed limit' to a speed camera ;) Seriously, that filter lane has been a nightmare. Just put a roundabout in. Sorted.
