Politicians celebrate boxing gym success
POLITICAL heavyweights stepped into the ring for real last week to celebrate the success of an award winning boxing club.
They were joined by the High Sheriff of Surrey, professor Michael Joy, who officially presented the club's members with a shield they won at the end of November recognising The Biz as the sports project of the year in Surrey.
The club won the prize at the High Sheriff Youth Awards, which were held at G Live in Guildford on Friday November 25.
Colin Martin, 32, boxing couch at The Biz, said: "We won the High Sheriff Youth Awards Sports Project of the Year award and the High Sheriff came to The Biz to present the award to the children.
"There were about 15 of our children here and I think it was a good chance for the children to understand that what we are doing is bigger than just sport and when we get accredited for that the children need to see that we are going somewhere and receiving the award is good for everyone."
Mr Martin also believes the occasion provided local dignitaries with a great opportunity to experience first hand exactly what The Biz is all about.
He said: "People have seen on paper what it is we do, but to actually see the training is important.
"Keeping the children fit is critical. It was a chance to meet the children if nothing else, and get their opinions and feelings on it too.
"The award is going to be put in a trophy cabinet because we are gradually starting to get trophies now.
"In terms of a time frame our success has happened quickly, but in terms of hard work, it has been a long road.
"The hours the volunteers are putting in, it has been a long slog."
The Biz is available to everyone and the gym is open Monday to Friday between 5pm and 9pm and on Saturday mornings from 10am until noon.
