After a rise in distraction burglaries in the Chertsey area before Christmas, police are now urging residents to be extra vigilant.

Beat bobby PC Dave Stockle has expressed his concerns about the rise in burglaries and in particular, the targetting of the elderly.

Fuel siphoned as lorry drivers sleep

Surrey Police have recorded three thefts this month in a lay-by of the duel carriage way which is a link road to the M25, where 650 litres of petrol has been stolen.

Longs Ltd in Hanworth Lane was targeted between the close of business on Friday December 12 and the following Monday morning when straff arrived for work.

Three men have been charged in connection with the death of 59-year-old Keith Hanna in Chertsey on Sunday July 13.

Mr Hanna died after a fight in Guildford Street, and a post mortem showed his cause of death was a brain haemorrhage.

Joseph Sewell, a 39-year-old labourer from Chertsey, was charged with manslaughter on Thursday December 11.

Seven animals were killed in the blaze, which broke out just after 6pm, and one had to be put down at the scene by an RSPCA vet after receiving serious injuries.

douglas_burden.jpgA pensioner targeted by fraudsters is warning residents to be on their guard after he received a scam letter telling him he had won a Euromillions jackpot worth £500,000.

Douglas Burden, 79, of Sandlewood Avenue, Chertsey, received the letter through the post on November 18 asking him for all his personal details so that he could claim his cash prize.

Derek raising money for burgled OAP

He is recruiting members of a charity he is involved in to help with fundraising, but says the charity prefers to remain nameless!

Man cautioned after drugs raid

A 41-year-old man has been cautioned for possession of a class B drug after police raided an address in Painesfield Drive, Chertsey on Thursday November 6.

Officers searched the house at about 7am, and found a small amount of what appeared to be class A and class C drugs.

The items were seized and sent away for analysis, and the man received a police caution the following day.

Burgled while they were on holiday

Burglars have raided a home in Waverley Drive, Chertsey, stealing a laptop and other valuables.

The couple who live in the house went on holiday on Sunday, and the break-in came to light when neighbours spotted a patio door open this morning (Tuesday).

A source said on closer inspection it was discovered that the thieves tried unsuccessfully to force the front door, back door and kitchen window before forcing the lock on the patio door.

A hard-hitting campaign aimed at warning motorists about the potentially fatal consequences of speeding will be launched across Surrey in September.

The "Amy" campaign, developed by the Surrey Safety Camera Partnership, will run for a its second year.
The poster depicts a young girl crying with the question "How would you tell Amy that you've killed her parents?"
